The season is almost finished and the wind in the evenings is getting not as reliable as it was during the summer. Therefor we had to find something else which keeps us fit and prepared for the next windsurfing sessions! As we have SUP’s this year in the center we thought of just taking a few and head to Theologos for a nice SUP session. First session was great even though it was very difficult to balance on these boards in the choppy conditions of Theologos! Once you manage to catch a wave it is one of the best feelings in the world and the good thing with SUP’s is that you don’t need a steep powerful wave to ride it, you can pretty much ride almost any wave - even little chops. And it’s such a good workout!

Flow

It’s so on! The PWA Freestyle events in this season are just mind busting for every windsurfer! The tour calendar this season is fully booked by one event after the other. My main focus is still (even with Jens’ very convincing words about wave sailing...) onto the freestyle discipline and this year is an AWESOME year for freestyle! There will be 7 events for men and 3 events for women this year, which is definitely more than it was in any other year and spots like Vietnam, Bonaire and Aruba definitely push the PWA events back into the right spotlight. After last season the whole tour seemed to be a bit at a dead end - only 4 freestyle, 4 wave and 5 slalom events took place, where not all of them are really worth to mention. This year we look at a fresh, inspiring tour which brings back the source of our sport!

It started all off with Vietnam on the 25th of March. It was a great event, even though I was in Australia by the time it was on (quite a good alternative in my opinion... ;o) ). Light winds made it a bit tricky for the guys but all in all the show was perfect!

Next stop was Podersdorf/Austria. As it took place in my home country I might be a bit biased, but it was a really perfect event! It wasn’t quite like it the other years, which was definitely not a disadvantage. Contrariwise it was refreshing to see the event with its main focus on the sport rather than on the “party week” which comes with it. Podersdorf used to be THE event in Europe together with Sylt. There used to be thousands of windsurfers traveling hundreds of k’s to relax at a lake with a beautiful scenery and enjoy watching the ambassadors of their sport - the best windsurfers of the world! I was 17 years old when I was shaking hands with Josh Stone and drinking beers with the “action man”, Brian Talma. It was a blast, but it lost its flair year by year and there were less windsurfers every year, but more people who just enjoyed getting completely wasted at some festival...

This year it was different. The weather was not as nice and I met lots of windsurfing people I haven't seen for quite a while. There was not a lot of wind in the beginning (which is quite usual for that event) but finally it was picking up and there were some really high wind, super fast freestyle heats going on! It was freezing cold but still lots of spectators. What happened? What did spark the peoples interest again? - I don’t really care but I like it!

Next (freestyle) stop was Bonaire. I couldn’t believe that it’s finally there where all the radical new school stuff was actually born! Bonaire is home for many of the best freestyle and slalom windsurfers of the world. It has the best kids and junior windsurf program in the world - there are kids at the age of 9 which can do moves I still dream of...
The best “new” PWA tour feature is the live stream! You can now watch every single heat right when it takes place and not miss out anything. I agree with many of you that most of the people don’t have time to watch live streams from the Caribbean with a 6 hours time difference, but for some “freaks” it’s definitely something you should consider. It helps a lot if you’re at uni and have exams coming up - it’s a perfect excuse not to read and study boring books...
I was watching all the heats over all 5 days and it was just great! The level was really high and I was also very impressed by the girls. Laure Treboux, she paid us a visit last year, and Sarah-Quita Offringa are at a very high competition level! They definitely don’t have to hide from men at all. Laure was pulling out super fast Grubbys and Konos and Sarah is pretty much on the same level as most of the guys competing. The guys heats where just mind busting! Triple moves, super high Konos, Shakas, Burners, Futures and many more! The heat I loved most was the first heat between Steven van Broeckhoven and Kiri Thode in the finals - but check out yourself...

Therefor we got really excited!

After two days of testing we can say that the choice of having Patrik Boards in the centre was definitely worth it! Smooth, fast, maneuverable, light,... - AWESOME!

Check out some more pics on our FB site...

Flow
